Norwood Cup 2024
It’s fantastic to be in Port Lincoln for another weekend of football with the 2024 Mortlock / Norwood Cup. To continue to be actively involved in a weekend of football that is steeped in so much history is a real privilege and something the club continues to take great pride in.
This year the Norwood Cup will once again showcase the best young U15 players on the Eyre Peninsula. This is far more than just an opportunity for our coaches to identify talented players with a view to offering opportunities to join the club’s talent pathway, it is also an opportunity for people from across the EP to come together and witness the future of football on the region. These young people will play in future premierships, embark on coaching journeys, embrace leadership roles, and make lifelong mates on and off the oval. They are the future of EP footy! We feel passionate about supporting this and greatly value the strengthening relationships between us and the local clubs and leagues here.
This year the SANFL introduced a U14 standalone competition, the Norwood FC was very proactive in choosing our Round 6 game be played in the region and showcasing our best EP U14 players. This was a selection process held at Pt Lincoln, Streaky Bay, and Elliston. We looked at match sim, fitness, and fundamentals. We played NAFC in Whyalla and had an outstanding win. I feel this will play a huge role in bringing the EP players together earlier to help them with their development.
Our Peter Teakle Cup game included an U13 and U16 game as curtain raisers from the PLFL, GFFL and EEFL. This was a great showcase for the talent we have throughout the EP. We especially wanted to showcase the U13 game as in many leagues we have 13-year-olds playing in the U16 competitions. This provided all players to shine at their own age level.
We started a new female academy which was run by Emily Newton, by beginning this academy it has allowed us to identify the young female’s players and hopefully help them and guide them through the Norwood SANFL programs and become league footballers.
In 2024, we are lucky to have many EP players chosen for higher honours, some who have already represented their regions and some who will come through in future years the Norwood Cup.
I would like to congratulate:
